Jurgen Klopp previews Newcastle United clash

Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho have tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Newcastle.

Curtis Jones is also out of action with the coronavirus and joins his Reds teammates in self-isolation.

A statement on Liverpool’s official website was posted just an hour ahead of Thursday’s clash with the Magpies. It reads: “The three players are now isolating.

“As a result, the entire Reds’ set-up, including all players and staff, were tested for COVID-19 again today with no further positive cases being detected.

“Supporters attending the game at Anfield are reminded of the new entry requirements and protocols in place to protect public safety.”

Virgil van Dijk has tested positive for Covid-19

Covid-19 has ravaged football in recent weeks as the Omicron variant has taken hold.

Brentford’s Premier League clash with Manchester United on Tuesday was the first to be called off after a break-out in the Old Trafford camp.

Burnley’s match with Watford was then postponed on Wednesday before Leicester’s clash with Tottenham was also called off this Thursday.

Spurs have been hit particularly hard by the virus over the past few weeks.

Chelsea’s clash with Everton will go ahead this Thursday as scheduled, along with Liverpool’s match with Newcastle.

But both Chelsea and Liverpool have lost players as a result of positive tests.

Thomas Tuchel is without Romelu Lukaku, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and the injured Ben Chilwell to play Everton.

Tuchel said: “Except for Kai Havertz, we have positive cases and Kai feels unwell and are waiting on test results.

“We did some extra tests at 12pm today and who arrives at lunch, from there we had to pick the team.

“The situation started yesterday. The results are the results and we still have a strong squad that should still be able to compete. We focus on the guys that are there.

“I did not lose my concentration, at some point it is getting difficult and with the overuse of players.”
