Mikel Arteta determined to keep focus on Arsenal’s win over Southampton

Although Arsenal earned a routine 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday, there’s a sense that trouble might be on the horizon for manager Mikel Arteta.

Before the game, it was confirmed that captain and star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would not be in the squad, with Arteta going on to reveal the reason for his absence was a disciplinary one.

Given Aubameyang’s profile and potential potency, there will likely be a lot of focus on the Gabon international’s position as the January transfer window edges closer into view. It will be a challenge for the team to thrive in spite of the noise from elsewhere.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is facing heavy criticism at Arsenal

Shearer slams Aubameyang

The Premier League’s all-time top scorer Alan Shearer believes Aubayemang’s conduct has been “unacceptable” at Arsenal.

Speaking on Match of the Day , Shearer was quizzed on the striker’s omission and referenced another incident where Arteta has had to leave the forward out due to problems away from the field; Aubameyang was dropped in March for the clash with Tottenham due to lateness.

“It’s unacceptable for the second time,” said Shearer.

“For it to happen once, not very good, but for it to happen again and for his manager to have to come out and criticise him the way he did and tell everyone again he’s had to leave him out for those reasons. It’s not good.”

Keown backtracks on captaincy claims

Martin Keown has gone back on claims he made in 2019, when he suggested Aubameyang should have been appointed as club captain ahead of Granit Xhaka.

The forward was eventually named skipper under Arteta, although this latest breach will surely prompt more scrutiny on his position, both as a leader and an Arsenal player, with the club’s former defender included.

“The captaincy is in question now,” said Keown of the 32-year-old.
