Cristiano Ronaldo ‘happy to be back home’ at Man United

Manchester United have yet to hit top gear under Ralf Rangnick, but the new interim manager can reflect on two wins from two games in the Premier League.

After last weekend’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, the Red Devils repeated the scoreline away at Norwich City on Saturday night, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty proving to be decisive in the second half.

The Red Devils are now up to fifth in the Premier League table and while there is still clearly a lot of work to be done at Old Trafford, United seem to be moving out of their early-season lull.

Here are your latest United headlines after the victory at Carrow Road.

Rangnick on half-time message

Rangnick told his United players to increase the tempo of their play at half time against Norwich.

The visitors were well short of their best in the first period against the Canaries and while the German coach will not be content with the level of performance from the team overall, there was an improvement in their display after changing ends.

“At half-time I told the boys we needed to increase the speed and intensity of the game,” said the United interim coach.

“The second half was a little bit better but at the end we were lucky to have a clean sheet and there were two or three clean sheets by David de Gea. It’s another clean sheet but still a lot of work to do. The second half I was not at all happy with the amount of corners that we gave away, but we got the three points.”

United’s ‘bad habits’

Former England international midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Rangnick still has some “bad habits” to iron out of the United team.

Although the Red Devils were winners at Norwich, they required a number of impressive stops from David De Gea to preserve the one-goal advantage.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Redknapp commented on how slack the team’s work was in possession.

“They’ve been so wasteful. I don’t think I’ve seen a game where so many United players have given the ball away as much as they have,” Redknapp explained.

“These moments have been fleeting, they’ve not really shown any quality and I think especially when they rested so many players in midweek I just wanted to see more from Man United.”

Missing trio explained

United were without Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata for the trip to Carrow Road.

Of the trio, the former has played most frequently in the first team this season, although Diogo Dalot has impressive with his more rounded attacking play in recent outings.

Rangnick provided the latest on all three ahead of the contest, along with the other ongoing injury absentees in the United squad.

“Two of them (Matic and Mata) are ill and Aaron is injured,” the United interim manager said. “He got two knocks against Young Boys. He didn’t feel good enough to be part of the team today.”
