Liverpool’s pursuit of Jude Bellingham has been given the seal of approval by Owen Hargreaves, who insists Premier League clubs should sign the wonderkid “whatever he costs”.

Bellingham, 18, continues to prove why he is arguably Europe’s most-exciting youngster with his accomplished midfield performances for Borussia Dortmund.

The England international has contributed three goals and nine assists this season, with his displays in the Champions League especially eye-catching despite Dortmund’s failure to reach the last 16.

As reported by Mirror Sport earlier this week, Liverpool are in pole position to sign Bellingham next summer with Jurgen Klopp unfazed by his £90million price tag.

Hargreaves claims the former Birmingham City star will be a superb asset “for a decade” and believes he could prove a better buy than teammate Erling Haaland.

Referencing Bellingham’s performance in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, Hargreaves told BT Sport : “First of all, against Man City he was the best midfielder on the pitch with Kevin De Bruyne out there, which is crazy.

“Everyone’s going on about Haaland, ‘spend the money on Haaland’, and rightly so. But, honestly, if I’m a big team in England – Man United, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea – that is the guy (Bellingham) you go and get.

“That is the heart of your midfield for a decade. Whatever it costs, you go and make that happen because he is special.”

Hargreaves alluded to Liverpool’s Premier League rivals prioritising a move for Haaland as the prolific striker continues to plunder goals at an alarming rate.

Indeed, the Reds hope this fixation on the Norwegian could help them pull off a swoop for Bellingham to bolster their options in the centre of the park.

United were among those who pursued Bellingham after his meteoric rise through the ranks at Birmingham and the starlet even met Sir Alex Ferguson during a tour of their Carrington training ground in early 2020.

However, he decided to join Dortmund in July that year for an initial fee of £20million rising to £30million.

The Bundesliga club provided Bellingham with guarantees of regular first-team football and a plan of how they would advance his development in the years to come.

They have lived up to their promises and the player has gone from strength to strength during his first one-and-a-half years in Germany.

Bellingham is contracted at Westfalenstadion until 2025, while Birmingham are monitoring his situation closely due to the lucrative sell-on clause included in his transfer last year.
