Possibly one of the world’s most customer-centric return policies, you’re likely already familiar with it if you’re one of the 200 million Amazon Prime members. The Amazon return policy states, “Amazon.com and most sellers on Amazon.com offer returns for items within 30 days of receipt of shipment.” Customers have plenty of flexibility on reasons for return plus the option to drop off at over 500 Whole Foods locations! Get your resale certificate
To start buying liquidation inventory, you will need to be a registered business. Once you’ve secured the right paperwork and have your finances in order, you can apply for a resale certificate. The purpose of having a resale certificate is to allow you to buy goods through your business without paying local sales tax at the time of purchase.

Since Amazon has auction lots in various sizes, you’d be hardpressed not to find a lot that works for your business needs. You can buy liquidated Amazon items in bulk, which could be anywhere from one to two pallets or 10-12 pallets in an LTL (less than truckload).
A couple of things to note when it comes to shipments:
- Orders which are less than 150 lbs at time of shipment may be split into multiple parcel shipments instead of being shipped LTL.
- Some LTL shipments may also be split into multiple shipments.
- Some orders may be fulfilled in multiple shipments.
Condition, type, and cosmetic condition
The condition and type of inventory you want will largely depend on what your customers are looking for. For example, if your customers are looking to make matches or complete inventory to make it fully functional, you can purchase mix and match home & garden inventory that may include different sized fixtures and materials. If you plan to refurbish inventory anyway, cosmetic condition is probably less important.
- New Condition – Unsold merchandise, also known as overstock, with no signs of use.
- Like New Condition – Unsold merchandise with minimal signs of handling.
- Refurbished – Merchandise that has been repaired to full functionality but may have signs of wear or use unless otherwise specified.
- Used – Good Condition – Merchandise with signs of use from handling and/or customer exposure that is sellable without repairs needed.
- Used – Fair Condition – Merchandise with heavy signs of use from handling and/or customer exposure that is likely in need of repair prior to resale.
- Salvage Condition – Merchandise requiring significant repairs prior to resale or else will be used for parts/components only.
- Mixed Condition – Can include products of any quality, including salvage. There’s no guarantee of one particular product condition unless specified in the manifest or auction details.
Place your bids (and win!)
Remember, with an auction set up, you only pay whatever price you’re willing to bid. You can use the auction filters like ‘Current High Bids’ to see auctions in the price range you’re comfortable with. So for example, if you only want to see auctions in the $500 – $1,000 range you can; if you have a little more spending power, you can filter by $1,000 – $5,000.

Other purchase requirements
Amazon requires all Buyers to enroll in their Amazon Tax Exemption Program (ATEP) by creating or uploading a tax exemption certificate within their portal.

Be crystal clear about what you’re selling
