Johnson now viewed as ‘liability’ by lifelong voters says expert

Gary Neville has torn into Boris Johnson after the Prime Minister attended two parties at Number 10 last year.

The former Manchester United and England defender declares there is “no chance” Johnson will get away with a potential breach of coronavirus regulations by gathering with “cronies”.

As revealed by the Daily Mirror last week, the PM gave a speech at a leaving party for a top aide in November, during the United Kingdom’s second lockdown.

He then held a Christmas event in December, when London was under tier three restrictions, which was attended by up to 40 or 50 colleagues as the rest of the capital stayed home to avoid spreading the virus.

Johnson has not denied the parties occurred but he has insisted no rules were broken.

Neville has not accepted this claim and expressed his outrage at Johnson’s behaviour at a time of “misery” and loneliness for much of the country, with families and friends prevented from seeing each other at the time.

He wrote on Twitter: “Are we really going to let this Number 10 party go? No chance! Last Xmas was a misery. Listening to him (Johnson) standing up there telling us what we couldn’t do.

“Families not seeing each other, loved ones dying alone. Whilst him and his cronies party in a tax payer funded residence!”

In a second tweet, Neville tagged the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats and Scottish National Party to demand action, writing: “Hi @UKLabour, @LibDems, @theSNP.

“Drop everything you’re doing and concentrate on accountability on this Party and the MPs lying to defend him. Enough!

Neville’s withering attack on Johnson comes after the Metropolitan Police confirmed they are “considering” complaints about the leaving do and Christmas bash.

Labour MPs Neil Coyle and Barry Gardiner have each written to Scotland Yard calling for an investigation into the two events, while Johnson is also under increasing pressure from his own Conservative Cabinet.

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab admitted holding a “formal party” would have been “clearly contrary to the guidance” in place last December.

“If there is a breach of the rules, there is a breach of the rules,” Raab told the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show. “But I don’t know the full facts because I wasn’t there.

“Of course, if there was a formal party held, of course that it something that is clearly contrary to the guidance. Of anyone held a party that it is contrary to the rules, of course that is the wrong thing to do.”
