Alan Shearer has blasted Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s conduct after the Arsenal skipper was sanctioned for breaching disciplinary rules for the second time in nine months.

Back in March, Aubameyang missed the north London derby with Tottenham when he reported for the game at The Emirates late.

The Gunners went on to beat their local rivals and the striker remained captain after the public dressing down by Mikel Arteta.

But on Saturday, the Gabon international was back in hot water with the Arsenal boss, dropped for the home clash with Southampton.

Arteta refused to go into detail as to which rule he had broken, although reports have suggested he returned from a trip abroad late.

“Unfortunately, (Aubameyang has been left out) due to a disciplinary breach,” Arteta explained before the game. “I think we’ve been very consistent with no negotiables as a team that we have set ourselves as a club, so he’s not involved today.

“Certainly, it’s not an easy situation, a situation that we want our club captain to be in.”

Aubameyang, who signed a bumper new deal in September 2020, has been in poor form this season, with his goal drought extending back to the win over Villa in October.

Shearer claimed the second indiscretion was “unacceptable”, with Arteta once again forced to go public over issues between the pair.

“It’s unacceptable for the second time,” Shearer said on Match of the Day. “For it to happen once, not very good, but for it to happen again and for his manager to have to come out and criticise him the way he did and tell everyone again he’s had to leave him out for those reasons. It’s not good.”

Arsenal legend Martin Keown also questioned Aubameyang’s attitude and anticipated that a change of captaincy could be on the horizon sooner rather than later.

Keown added: “The captaincy is in question now. You can’t keep being late or disappearing on trips abroad and not coming back on time, your team needs you and he’s not there when you need him most so I expect that to change.”

Arteta was explicitly asked about Aubaemyang’s future as captain, instead focusing on the 3-0 win over Southampton which saw them emphatically bounce back from defeat to Everton last time out.

“Let’s talk about the game, guys,” said Arteta. “I tried to explain to you what it was and I did it frankly, and I am not going to say anything else.

“I am going to focus on the performance and what the team has done on the pitch.

“It was a disciplinary breach and that’s why he was out of the squad. I am really happy that we won 3-0 and we move onto the next one against West Ham guys.

“I am telling you, you are not going to get anything else from me.”
